Researching

Researching - Level 1

Research is fundamental to the design process, and it is used for two major purposes.

First, design professionals use research to understand problems with a current design before they attempt to solve them with a new design. They ask questions such as: What is the existing situation? Who will be affected by the solution, and what do those people need most?

Secondly, designers use research for inspiration, to understand how others have solved similar problems in the past. Research most often happens in the Brainstorming and Collecting Information phases of the design process.

Earning the Researching Level 1 badge means your research begins to define and understand your design problem. You have collected information on existing conditions, either by taking notes, sketching, photographing or otherwise documenting the problem.

Good Example:
  • Your research looks at the existing situation, and you have included at least one sketch, photograph, audio recording, video, or other media to document conditions of the design

Poor Example:
  • Important details are missing
  • Research includes major, distracting errors
  • Writing is unclear and confusing

Researching - Level 2

Your research begins to analyze the design problem. It uses more than one research medium (notes, sketches, photographs, etc) to document the existing problem. Plus, your research includes important details about how people use the space or the design, how materials are used, how it is impacted by the environment, and more. It might include how others have solved similar problems in the past. Your research begins to pave the way for a solution.

Good Example:
  • Your research uses more than one sketch, photograph, audio recording, video, or other media to document the existing situation
  • Your research contains important, concrete details about the existing situation, and it is mostly clearly explained
  • Your research may begin to investigate how others have solved similar problems

Poor Example:
  • Only a few important details are included
  • Research contains more than a few errors
  • Writing is still somewhat confusing, even though it’s on the right track

Researching - Level 3

Your research is captured in a variety of media, and it contains a thorough look at the current problem. It documents details such as how people use the space or the design, how materials are used, how it is impacted by the environment, and more. It also shows how others have solved similar problems in the past. Most importantly, your research unites information from both your current situation and others’ solutions. These elements form the building blocks of a unique solution.

Good Example:
  • Your research uses sketches, photographs, audio recordings, video, or other media to document both existing conditions and how others have solved similar problems
  • Your research is detailed and thorough, clearly explained and contains very few errors
  • Your research makes strong connections between the current situation and others’ solutions
  • Your research is persuasive, beginning to make the case for your unique solution

Poor Example:
  • Some important details are still missing
  • Still at least a few errors
  • Writing still needs work to become more clear and persuasive
