2012 national competition project #025 | cafeteria redesign
|Springville High School's cafeteria and kitchen are as old as the school itself. Nearly 50 years old, the facilities are outdated and cannot meet the growing number of students that eat school lunch. Currently, there are 400 students who purchase their food from the school, this number excludes the students that bring a lunch from home. There are only about 300 seats available in the cafeteria, leaving more than a hundreds students to find places elsewhere in the school. The cafeteria stands in between three different halls, so expansion could be problematic for foot traffic. However, there is a very large outside courtyard that many students eat in during the warmer days. My plan is to extend the cafeteria into this outside courtyard. With heating, there should be plenty of seats for the winter months while still granting enough room outside during the nicer days. The courtyard is massive, and with the new allocation of space, the janitorial staff will finally have enough room to store tables during special events. The food service staff will also receive a new kitchen, efficiently redesigned to hold new equipment, and to manage the long lines of students waiting to purchase their food.
