Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #207
|Overview
At High Tech High School, the gym, weight room, different courts are just a walk away from the school. However, the school does have other sports that the current school cannot accommodate because of space. Students would need to travel from the school to other places, and maybe other towns, for more sports such as bowling, golf, soccer, etc.
The type of atmosphere I would like to create is to have students feel like they are not so isolated from the outside. This means using a lot of glass paneling and having minimal walls. I would like to include rooms for the various sports that the school currently offers. I would design different pavilions that group similar sports together. For example, there could be a pavilion with only court sports such as badminton, tennis, volleyball, basketball, etc. I was also thinking how I could incorporate environmentally friendly structures. High Tech High School’s roof is flat. So, I was thinking putting an open space for field sports like soccer, since soccer is a popular sport among many students in the school. This would also turn the roof into a green roof providing water absorption for when it rains and insulation. I would also like to improve the current high school gym because I believe that there could be better use of space.
I want the new athletic pavilion spaces to look and feel connected with each sport. I am keeping in mind a design that is similar to an open floor pan of a house. Most, if not all rooms would feel a sense of flowing through one another.
