Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #190
|High Tech High School is located at the center of a busy commercial and residential area. The school is surrounded by a highway; Tonnelle Ave; which has on going traffic, commercial stores, manufacturing factories, and the noise of passing trains in the background. While building this athletic pavilion I want to steer away from the racket occurring around the school and focus more on the view that the school has towards the Meadowlands. I want to create an open atmosphere where there is enough space for student/faculty functions to occur but to still have an area for people to be able to spectate and enjoy the pavilion additionally. The surrounding commotion influences many students to stay inside the main school building instead of occupying the school's athletic facilitates, also the walk from the schools' main building to it's athletic facilities is lengthy. The location of the structure would most likely be behind the main school building, in the existing parking lot. Because of disturbing factors surrounding the school it is difficult to included outside spaces. With the help of skylights and a few elevated outside spaces student will be able to take in sunlight while avoiding some of the commotion. My goal for the athletic pavilion is to find a way include open spaces and windows, something that the main school building of High Tech High School lacks. A majority of students and faculty criticize the insufficient amount of windows throughout the school. Another important factor, is that in the following school year High Tech High School will be accepting an increased amount of students that will increase foot traffic and noise inside the school. This is why it is important for the new athletic facilities to be appealing to the student body so that during frees students will be more inclined to spend their time in the athletic pavilion, reducing school foot traffic and improving their health.
