Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #131
|With the new age of technology upon us, much of our population suffers from obesity. We are exercising less, shifting our focus away from being active physically, and becoming more reliant and consumed in the usage of computers and other forms of technology.
My school, Advanced Technologies Academy, located in Las Vegas, is completely reliant on the use of the computers in everyday school life. There are no sports, much less good physical education facilities. Due to the high focus on technology on the school, our school lacks sufficient focus on the athletic program, especially the gym. The gym built in 2000, is small and is outdated compared to other sport facilities. When it was first built, it could support the general small population of the high school, however over the course of 14 years, it can longer be sufficient for the larger population of A-TECH, thus needs renovation. There are certain elements that also needs to be fixed besides the expansion of the gym area itself. Certain rooms are also placed in awkward positions as well have inefficiencies in their uses of space.
Design Solution: To redesign and renovate our school’s exterior as well as the interior. The exterior should be designed in such way that will entice other students to want to walk into the building and check out what it happening. The interior will be remodeled to include an additional court and an addition space for the weight room. The lobby area should be expanded to incorporate a public area in which others may sit, relax, or wait for others. The basketball court will still be the central structure of the building. I do not plan on completely restructuring the whole building, just update the building in order to fit the needs of the current A-TECH. This will minimize the costs associated with destroying the whole building while still being able to achieve a solution to the design problem. The building should be designed to take advantage of the natural sunlight that is abundant in Las Vegas, with curtain walls to provide natural light.
