A Pocket Park for Jersey City
|The English Oak Tree is nothing short of a natural marvel. In suitable conditions, they can grow up to 50 feet tall, making them one of the most prominent living things in their environments. Furthermore, the tree serves as a major contributor to biodiversity in their habitats. They provide shelter for hundreds of species of animals including moths, birds, squirrels, and bugs. In this community, the animals intermingle symbiotically to create an environment that progresses together.
Jersey City, New Jersey is one of the most up-and-coming cities in the United States. Its location facing Manhattan Island makes for a cosmopolitan experience in a toned-down, familial urban area. In January 2015, financial analysts named Jersey City the most diverse city in the country. Furthermore, it has experienced a major construction boom in recent years, with city surveyors predicting at least one 100m+ skyscraper will be under construction at all times somewhere in the city for the next ten years. In that sense, Jersey City can be viewed as a microcosm of diversity, cosmopolitanism, and innovative design.
However, one of the biggest issues facing the city is a lack of community space in more blighted areas of the city. These neighborhoods need spaces that act in the way the English Oak does. A pocket park in an area of Jersey City seeing less development would establish a sense of community, provide a public meeting space, keep children out of harm's way, and add to the city's widely shifting dynamic. This project explores the design and benefits of a pocket park in Jersey City.
