The Pocket Park
|The pocket park, as it is currently, is a desolate, dry, lifeless area that does not attract visitors. In order to revitalize it, I propose adding certain elements that will satisfy the needs and wants of the children and residents in the area. In the area with the zip code 89106, more than 83% of current residents have children; therefore, it is highly appropriate to include parks designed for little children. In addition, there are multiple schools in this zip code, such as KR Booker Elementary School, West Preparatory Academy, Andre Agassi High School, Kit Carson Elementary School, Advanced Technologies Academy, and more. Due to the high number of high schools and elementary schools in the area, it is wise to design the park to be accessible and suited for little kids as well as for teenagers who want to hang out after school.
Problem: The purpose of the design is to create a practical, accessible, and safe park for residents and any visitors (such as students). The park should be a vibrant green space in the desert and should be an oasis for the people who go.
Solution: I propose that the design involve an abundance of green plants, with a pond, to make it stand out in the dry, desert climate. As every park should, this one will include seating area with tables as well as canopies for shade in the brutal summers, when the temperatures reach triple digits. It will also include unique playground areas that will allow kids to exercise safely.

You have stated a clear problem and solution. I like that you have thought about design for all ages as well as the climatic environment and how it will affect people. I like how you incorporated a few sustainable features into your park. I definitely enjoyed the section. I would like to see further development in the execution of your design such as final renderings and floor plans.
The original research helped inform the early stages of the project; the rationale for having a pavilion was the most interesting part. You state that you're hoping to provide practical solutions but some of what you're proposing might be particularly challenging for the specific site you've selected.
