Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #266
|East High school was founded in 1967, and was the fourth public high school in the Lincoln Public Schools district. It has gone through a series of renovations over the past years. All of these renovations have stayed true to the original styling of the school. That said none of these renovations really focused on the athletic facilities. The gyms at east are small and spread apart, which takes up more space that necessary. The weight room is also small. As soon as a team goes in to use it, it becomes packed and makes it difficult to do a work out. The aerobics room is small and out of the way which means it generally goes unused since nobody knows where it is. Lastly there is the pool. It has limited seating and is situated in a way that makes it easy to miss and hard to get to.
With my Design I intend to fix these issues all the while making it seem like the outside at least that it was all built in the late 1960's. The south gym is the most used of the three gyms at East High, not only for games and practices but for classes as well. This is fine except that there are also classes that take place in the pool. My design will feature a retractable gym floor that will open to reveal a pool underneath. besides saving space, this design will also give the pool more seating for events like swimming and diving meets.
Next is the wrestling room, weight room, and aerobics room. My goal is to get all of things into one large space. The benefits of this are things like more space, as well as being able to add bleachers around the wrestling area meaning East high would more easily be able to host wrestling events. having the weight and aerobic equipment right by it will also allow athletes to stay warm when not participating, which in turn will help lower the chance of injury. having it out in the open will also give more room and make the areas more accessible and noticeable.
