Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #212
|The gym in our school, specifically the first and 8th floor gyms are very similar and somewhat different in their problems. I'm going to start with the first floor. It is a big open space that gets too hot or too cold too easily due to the uncontrollable climate and the not so good windows that clearly are old and have been there since 50 or so years ago. There is also the basketball hoops, some of these need to be repaired and renovated as they are getting old and parts are rusting or falling off. Another problem is the seating and bleachers is rather uncomfortable and a hassle to drag out. An example of this are the pull out metal bleachers which clearly have seen better days. The 8th floor gym is a small confined space, with too many basketball hoops appropriate for that space. The sun often gets in the way in the mornings in certain spots, and can hinder playing experience with the sun getting in your eyes. It doesn't really get too hot up there except towards the summer time/ late spring, in which it is in fact a problem. There is also no seating on the 8th floor.
Ways to fix the first floor gym, are to, get better ventilation, but how; Well by getting new windows that can let air in and out efficiently, and by installing air conditioners in said windows and by adding heating fixtures for when it gets too cold if it does. The bleachers need to be repainted and refurnished, with new cushioning to sit on, and the metal bleachers can be reused, put on the eighth floor gym, they're no good. Also get new modernized basketball hoops to play with. For the 8th floor gym to fix its problems is to get rid of some of the hoops because there are too many, then add better ventilation in the walls, because there are plenty of walls on the 8th floor to put it in, and have windows that don't let sunlight in so easy, also so it controls the heat that gets in. Finally put in some seating by expanding the gym and putting the metal bleachers from the first floor to the eight, saving money, and not needing to buy new ones.
