The point of this challenge is to build a house using shipping containers that are 40 feet long 8 feet wide and 8 feet tall. No more than 4 containers may be used, and the total project may not cost more than $30,000. Used containers cost about $1,200 and new containers cost $6,000. Using shipping containers as the building blocks of a house can be advantageous because the shipping containers can be easily transported to the site and assembled. They are very weather resistant and have a strong frame as they are meant to resist ocean weather and be stacked while bearing the weight of many other fully loaded crates. Also, in places like Australia that import just about everything, used shipping containers are in abundance and therefore make good building materials for a very modern looking home while also helping the environment. However there are also some disadvantages to using shipping containers. For example, the containers may have contained hazardous materials at one point including toxins to keep pests out. Therefore, the old wood needs to be removed and the entire thing needs to be sand blasted and repainted. Also, the containers are poorly insulated and can turn into an oven in the sun. Also, when the temperature changes, the containers are prone to condensation and rust if they stay wet for too long. Also, as manipulating and customizing metal containers is not nearly as simple as drilling a hole in wood or hammering in a nail. Therefore, specialized tools and tradesman such as welders are required to make modifications.
