To design a residential home constructed out of intermodal shipping containers. The concept of taking a prefabricated structure and repurposing it is not a new concept but the idea of using an international shipping container as the base for a residential home is new; and while it has advantages it also has disadvantages. Advantages of using a shipping container for a home structure is that the steel is designed to withstand the elements on international cargo ships and the ability to stack multiple units on top of one another. However they are not designed to keep the cargo warm and dry so insulation is need for the ability for people to habitat the container and for the container to have a longer lifespan. A used container will cost about $1200 and a brand new one $4000. While a used container costs less than half the price of a new one it will need to be cleaned and repainted in order to make sure it is a safe environment to live in. It will also need specialized labor in order to create the steel framing for any doors and windows as to not compromise the structure.. This will add to the total price but will be more environmentally friendly. Because of the cost of a 4 container house with new containers will be $16,000 before the cost of labor and I beams for support; I believe this will push people to instead build a traditional house. We are allowed up to 4 shipping containers for our design. I intend to design the house with two shipping containers for a family of 2, with a guest room. I believe the ideal amount of square feet compared to the cost of the final product exists in a structure created with two shipping containers. I plan to reduce the total cost by integrating the staircase into the concrete base that the containers will sit on.
