The containers are extremely weather resistant. It is also easy to buy these containers. Also, the containers are not too expensive, which makes them an inexpensive housing. The containers naturally are water tight, making the inside almost always dry at all times. Another benefit of the containers is that they were built to be stacked on top of each other, making them extremely study and strong.
III. What are the disadvantages to using shipping containers as the main building blocks of house design? When converting a shipping container into a home there are several negatives about the product and the building process. One of these negatives is that they have very little isolation, so they can’t protect the owner from the heat and the cold. Another negative is that when adding things on and cutting things it takes a lot more time than traditional homes. On top of that it is sometimes hard to get the right permits to work of the steel part of the containers. Since the containers are made out of metal they can rust very easy so precautionary measures have to make to prevent rusting. If the buying decides to buy the container used, in most cases it has to be stripped, cleaned, and repainted before construction on it can begin. Another negative is that to move the shipping containers you have to have a crane or a forklift. The containers also provide do not give a lot of room to work with either.
IV. As you understand them, what are the parameters of this design challenge? A max of four 40x8 shipping containers bought at 6,000 each can be used. The budget is 30,000.00 including the containers. The house can be for an individual or for a whole family. The containers are 8’6” or 9’ 6” tall.
