The process of design is very important. It teaches others the purpose of your design. So your first step is very simple.
Steps to create a great design
1.) Find a project that you can improve on
2.) State the problems of the project
3.) State how you will improve on the project
4.) Do a rough sketch to see if your project fix the problem. Note: if your design solution fixes the problem great. If your design does not fix the problem then continue to do some brainstorming to find the best solution.
5.) Use a developmental tool (Sketch up, Revit , or Auto CAD.. ETC ) to create a clear project and thought to your audience.

6.) Create a presentation that explains your full design process.
Note: remember that your final design presentation should be able to speak for you in clarity.
