2012 national competition project #042 | cafeteria redesign

Summary

After an in-depth analysis of my school cafeteria and the surrouding areas, I observed several main problems with my cafeteria now. These include a lack of color and no outdoor seating areas. The current design of my cafeteria also has a lot of wasted space along the perimeter of the room, and intense crowding in the center of the room. Also, when I interviewed the kitchen staff their main complaint was a lack of refrigeration and food storage room. I plan to address these major problems and other lesser problems in my new design. However, my cafeteria is very well-lit and I hope to maintain this.

I also consulted my school principal, and she informed me that we have 1,400 students at our school, with four lunch periods. This means that 350 students must be able to comfortably fit in the cafeteria at one time. Also, we need some versatile, movable furniture in the space because the cafeteria is sometimes used as a large group instruction room after school hours.

One student I talked to, Amber Pferdekamper, said that she wished my cafeteria had more space to move around and a convenient place to store bags and books while she eats her lunch. Maybe I can incorporate shelving units to the cafeteria to provide student storage.
