2012 national competition project #031 | cafeteria redesign

Summary

After reviewing all my work from each step, I was able to finalize the design for my improved school cafeteria. I followed most of my plans from the beginning, fixing a few little things here and there to make the cafeteria better. In this new cafeteria, I focused on having a variety of seating and more seating areas, which I accomplished by adding a second level, and an outside eating area. I also made sure to have more space to move around throughout the cafeteria and added more trash cans, to make them easily accessible to students. To make the cafeteria more sustainable, I added recycle bins, and large windows that will light the cafeteria, so less electricity will have to be used for artificial lighting. In addition, I redesigned the kitchen so that all food is served in one side of the cafeteria; each section of food (two hot lunches, the snack bar, and sandwiches) has its own entrance and exit, and there are dividers to define and separate each line of students. Also, I made each line have its own cash regisiter, so that the lines do not build up and students are not waiting a long time. This new system makes food serving simple and quick.
