Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #281

Summary

In this section, my objective was to establish what facilities currently exist at THS, as well as explore the needs of the school. First, I interviewed select coaches, gym teachers, faculty and team captains within our school, taking notes and highlighting key points of what they said. I asked what they like, what they do not like and what they would want to see changed within the athletic facilities at THS. Then I asked the same questions to the school’s Head of the Athletic Department.
Based on my initial feedback, I created an online survey for the entire school community, asking similar questions and asked when they use the athletic facilities. The answers were grouped into four categories: student athletes, student non-athletes, athletic staff/coaches, and general faculty. Using the survey’s results, I created statistics of what the school community wants, along with figuring out how often non-athletes at the school currently use the athletic facilities. In addition to the statistical analysis, I created a video documenting the current athletic facilities.
The final stage of the initial phase, I completed case studies of other k-12 sites, documenting and making notes of what I felt was successful and interested.
- First Slide: Contains a link to the data collected from the survey of the opinions concerning the current athletic facilities.
- Second Slide: Contains a link to a YouTube video that I made documenting the existing athletic facility.
- Third Slide: A document of the summaries from various interviews within the school community. It provides specific opinions about how the coaches, captains and the Head of Athletics feel about the current athletic department.
- Fourth Slide: Spreadsheet documenting the different sports and athletic clubs available at THS, as well as how many people participate in each activity.
- Fifth Slide: Case studies I completed to find inspiration and interesting designs.
