Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #205
|When thinking about a design for an athletic pavilion, there are a lot of factors that should come to mind. The most important question would be what type of athletics will be taking place at this pavilion. I say this because it is the reason for your design. Designing a structure then trying to "fit" the purpose on the building wont work as well as having the purpose and designing around it. It will be difficult to try to express the image created in my head but I think I can over come any hardship thrown at me.
The atmosphere I would want this athletic pavilion to have is one that screams GO. I want everyone that steps foot into the building to feel a sense of drive and motivation to do anything they want. This would include having areas inside and outside contributing to all types of physical activities. There would be areas for weight lifting, running, stretching, playing all types of sports, a lounge, and even a nutrition center. I think the biggest problem I will have to face is getting all the activities to fit in the amount of space available. The area where the APA is located is to small to fit all these activities unless my design is more vertical. I also have to consider the fact that where it is located floods are common. There is a street that can't be blocked which connects the high school to the APA so a bridge may be an option to provide safety to all the students.
The culture of my school will only be affected in a positive way. I see tons of classmates stay after school to do all different types of activities and our athletic equipment and fields aren't as good as they could be. Teenagers like working out to get fit or just play around with their friends. This new facility will bring the athlete out of every student and let them have fun while doing it. I think bringing more opportunities into this already athletic environment will increase the student interaction rate because everyone will want to be a part of the athletic pavilion to improve their overall health and make a few friendships on the way.
