Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #132

Summary

I collected information through an onsite tour and documentation of exterior and interior features of ATA's current gym. In order to find out what makes the current ATA gym inefficient and problematic, I asked the people who worked the longest and the most around the gym. The most knowledgeable teachers on campus that know about and use the building daily were Mr. Knoeppel, the architecture teacher; and the physical education teachers. Every student that has attended ATA are required to take physical education for their freshman and sophomore year, virtually everyone has experienced these problems in one way or another. The building is too small and cannot hold the continually growing population of students that go to the school. The architecture was supposed to match the main buildling's architecture, but funds were poorly managed and a building that looks like it is trying to look similar was built as a result. The weight room is too small and does not have enough space to hold each class that uses it, not to mention the glass blocks that the sun hits which makes the room uncomfortably hot and humid during the day. Adjustments were made to the original building when it was built, but what students have today does not fit or meet the standards of what students expect and should have.
