Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #141

Summary

One problem with the current gymnasium is the small size of our weight room. Our school holds a weight training club event after school, but the Weight room is too small and becomes cramped and smelly This was a simple fix. Increase the size, then equipment can be added according to the preference of the Physical Education department.
Another problem was the small size of the locker rooms. Everything in the A-TECH gymnasium seems to be too small. Increasing the size of the locker rooms allowed me space to add more lockers and eliminate the inconvenience of having to share a locker with a classmate.
The health classroom (room 902) was randomly placed on the western side of the gymnasium, causing stress to students who have classes furthest from the health classroom. At first I tried to find a place for it, but finally decided that it should be removed altogether and the health classroom should be integrated into the main building of the school.
Sometimes a P.E. class can be quite large, and using the space that is in the gym is not quite comfortable at times. For example, a large classroom wants to play basketball, but in order to form teams of reasonable numbers, the class would need to be split into two groups. I rotated the gym area and copied it, adding another identical space alongside it. The two areas are separated by a net which easily slides along a cable that runs between the two areas from wall to wall.
The gym is also lacking in natural lighting. Therefore, I added windows. The entrance of the gym is made up of windows which allow light to pass into the gymnasium.
