Summary

We chose to recreate the library because it is an area that serves as a vital source of knowledge and learning for the school. Whether it is books, computers, or simply a place to study it truly plays an important role in students learning. The current library has a lot of problems, mainly the fact that it is too small for the current schools population. The library can only hold around 150 students, which is very inconvenient because the current population of the school is 1600. The library also only has one couch, and two comfortable chairs, the rest of the seating is consisted of hard backed plastic chairs. Also as soon as you walk into the library you are aware that there is a significant lack of storage area. Empty cardboard boxes crowd the left side of the entrance, and unused textbooks are stored on top of bookshelves or on the floor. The tables in the library are round; which is nice, for it allows more discussion for students. However, the tables are too few. Audio and video equipment does not have a storage space, instead it is scattered around the library.

Our current librarian feels that the librarian is too divided, with three separate rooms it causes for a disjointed feeling. Also a teacher must reserve the library for a current day in order to ensure that all of their students have enough computers. However, most classes consist of 36 students while the library only has 33. She feels that the current library has a very boring look and feel to it, which causes students to not have an incentive to study or learn in there. Also there are too many doors which cause for security problems, especially with the doors that are accessible from the hallways. She is definitely not happy about the lack of storage for the books. If she could make changes to the current library she would get better seating, a bigger library, more natural light, more storage, and larger windows.

The library is a place used for studying, researching, and working on projects with other groups. We would like to extend the uses of a library to include all the original uses plus a place for meetings and community projects.
