Summary

Future Design wants the best for students who use the school library the most, so we sent a team to get feedback for the students and the teachers to understand what a dream library would be like. The panel was really helpful to our company; they answered a lot of our questions and helped us get a bigger picture on what the best library would be for this school.

Our first student that we interviewed said, " Our library is a square building with shelves, tables and about a 1000 students crammed into it'. Listening to more than 8 students complaining about how the space is limited and how the building has limited features to offer to the students. One of the students that we interviewed used harsh words saying "our library is like a jail, it serves no purpose to the students except holding books”. A senior that has been here for two years and also at many other school said, “The library looks like it was made in the 17th century and it hasn’t been remodeled in the past 300 years, take our library and compare it to other high schools and you get a well-designed building with a cardboard box.

Our school librarian gave us great feedback saying," that the library is outdated old and worn out", she also quoted “that our library has limited space and would like to see more technology, computer and space offered to students.

Mr. Kern, senior director of facilities for San Juan Unified District, was a part of the panel and helped us with addressing the state and San Juan district requirements, he added that, “federal government sets standards for building schools and we have to follow them.

In order to get our community involved with the library we addressed our questions to Mr. Manor, from the community garden organization, he said, 'a community garden is a great way of getting the community involved". The garden will bring the community to the library and give them a chance to work on the garden or visit the library.

Wanting to provide the best library to students we researched what modern libraries look like and this webpage expanded our imagination and how far we can go with every aspect of the library. http://weburbanist.com/2008/12/10/clever-creative-modern-library-archite....

The library doesn’t have lots of light coming through the windows and there are lots of books lying around. So we decided to expand the library and have tall glass widows that can be helpful to the garden and natural light getting in the garden. The library also little room for the 1600 students that we have at the school. The technology isn’t up to date and really slow, there are many problems that we observed and that we are hoping to change in our design
