2013 national competition project | Library Redesign #108
|Library Redesign Contest
School History:
Lincoln East High School first opened in 1967. It was the fourth high school in the Lincoln Public Schools system. It housed students from grades 7-12. At the time, it was considered one of the nicest schools in the state. However, as years passed, many aspects of the school have become outdated. As the population of East has grown the classrooms and hallways became overpopulated. In 1995, East went from a grade 7-12 school to a more traditional grade 9-12 high school. In 1997, the school added a whole new wing to the school to add classes and space. Along with the new wing, a new gymnasium and weight room were also added. The final renovation in 1997 was that the courtyard area became an interior commons. The most recent renovations included building a new auditorium and expanding the school cafeteria. The HVAC systems were also improved, making them now geothermal.
Current Library:
Our library is an underused resource at our school. Most students have little interest in our library. I only use the library if I need to print something off real quick or if I need to study during lunch before a test. Currently the library has books spread all around the building, this can be annoying if you are looking to browse. In addition, books are rarely even used in our library because more and more information is available online. In my opinion the library is inefficient, the computer area is an long curving table that is an annoyance in the middle of the library. Personal studying tables are not private and it would be better for students to have their own little walled off desks to study or work quietly at.
New Library:
In my redesigned library I will create a place people will want to go to get things done. The computer area will be neatly pushed into a corner of the library where the computers will be in rows for easy access. Also on the opposite corner there will be personal study tables which are privately walled off each other so the person studying or working will be able to work or study in private. To make the library more up-to-date there will be a couple small shelf areas where laptops can be rented out by students. Besides private study, group study is important as well and to accommodate groups working together to study or work on a project there are circular tables located in the middle of the library. The excess storage space on the northwest side of the library will be the place where all the books will be stored in one neat area where there used to be storage space. Also there will be a theater room for presentations.

Well written and well thought out opening statement! Nicely done.
