‘Collect Information Worksheet – Container House 1 | P a g e ‘Collect Information’ Worksheet: Affordable Container House In order to develop innovative project solutions, it is critical that you develop a clear understanding of all relevant design criteria. This worksheet is intended to help you identify important factors that shape this project by prompting a response to questions in four key categories: who, where, what, and why. WHO Who will occupy the container home? Who will live in this house? -A family with children and some pets How many people and how are they related? - About 5 people the two parents and three children What are their genders and ages? - The parents will be around there 30s and one child will be 12 (male) another child will be 8 (male) and the last one will be 5 years old (female) with 2 dogs What do they do? - The dad is a HVAC AR and the mom is an orthologous the children go to school What are their physical needs? - Material needs – food, clothing, shelter What are their emotional needs? - Love, security and care. What are some key demographical characteristics of the dwelling’s occupants? - There’s a park a couple blocks away, a corner grocery store by the park. - Who will interact with the container home and its occupants? Who are the neighbors? To the right there will be a small family of 3 and to the left there will be a large family of 7. What are their physical needs? Food clothes and shelter What are their emotional needs? Love security and care How will they interact with the unit and its occupants They will interact with them by being there friends and there kids going to school together. What are some of the main characteristics of the neighborhood and the community? The neighborhood will be quiet and very friendly the neighbors all get along and get together the children all play with each other. The community will be violence reduced and there is patrol close by. Who will own the house and pay for its construction and upkeep? How long will they want to live in the container house? They will want to live there till there 12 year old needs to go to high school. How would you describe their aesthetic preferences with respect to the container design? They are not that picky with the design Who will live or work in close proximity to the dwelling? What concerns might they have? They might have the concern of having their children get to school late or that they might not be able to get to them at time or that there is train tracks How might a container house design either please or annoy a neighbor? They might get annoyed because it might smell to them or they don’t like the material or it goes over their land. It might please them because they might like the view. Who might threaten the safety of the home’s occupants? They might be threatened with the raccoons and rats and maybe a few robbers Why would they be interested in the occupants? They may be interested because some people don’t think value wise but the fact that they have enough to make a house may conclude to them that they have a lot of money and the animals because of the food What physical characteristics or special abilities would they have that could endanger the occupants? The animals may have rabies and the robbers may have guns and other weapons WHERE Where will the container home be located? It will be located in 51st Lawndale How much space is available for the container home? Collect the site dimensions and a site plan. Find a location map. Collect photos of the site and adjacent uses. The dimension is about the average like the rest of the houses (70 acres) What are the annual weather conditions? They are not that bad I mean its Chicago so they will be kind of wild but then in the summer the weather will be very nice What is the proximity to other people or buildings? Find dimensions to the neighboring structures/buildings. The houses around it are about 70 acres each or bigger What are the geographic conditions of the site? The conditions are not that bad there normal weather a good quantity of snow and in the summer it looks pretty nice What are the traffic conditions near the site? The traffic will be a bit of a problem because its in the middle of a Uno school and curie high school What zoning restrictions impact the design? Some restrictions are that there is a neighbor and it can’t be that wide. How will the site location impact the health and safety of the occupants? The health may be that the trains presence and the safety will be that there is cars passing all the time because it’s a busy street. How will the site location impact the health and safety of people who interact with the house? It might impact the health of the people by the fact that there is a factory by it Where will the container home be converted into a living structure? Will the home be constructed on‐site? Yes Where will the materials for the living space be acquired? Recyclable WHAT What other materials will you need to convert the shipping container into a living space? Will the materials used need to be durable over long periods of time? Yes Will the materials have to reflect a certain type of aesthetic? Yes maybe that they are not the type that can give you a disease Will the budget limit the type of materials that can be used? A little Will certain materials pose a danger to or protect the home’s occupants or those who interact with the container home? Yes because maybe they may be allergic to something there or maybe like the metal can be used in the windows so that less robberies will happen What types of recycled materials can be used to convert the container in to an affordable house? Wood and Metal maybe steel and recyclable materials What types of designs and construction methods are best suited for converting a shipping container? What features will the dwelling need to have to be a livable space? It will need to have electricity, pluming ,heating ,and cooling What are the essential requirements for a day‐to‐day living space? That the place has pluming for the bathroom and to be able to have water and electricity and ventilation What special requirements stem from using a shipping container as a primary structure? It needs a lot of material so that the heat or cold will stay in when it needs to and its able to be in there during any weather. What is the ultimate function of the container home? What does this require? For people to be there and be able to have a home like any other. It needs good sources and structures WHY Why are you building a dwelling? Will the dwelling be used for any other commercial purposes such as a home business? No Will it be used for primary or secondary housing? Primary Will it convey some type of social status? Yes Will it symbolize some type of attitude regarding environmental sustainability? No Why use a shipping container as a primary structure in a living space? Why is it a good primary structure? Its good primary structure because its affordable and it’s has a lot of space for kids Why not just build a brand new house from all new materials? Because its not as affordable . Think of it this way when you go to the store and buy something new its not worth the same when you try selling it then when the store is. Reason is because at the store its not opened and with you its been opened and used so the value goes down. Same with materials. If they are new then the cost more because they haven’t been used but if its used materials then it will cost cheaper because it has already been used. Why do you see a demand for these dwellings? What are some specific situations in which this housing could be most practical? Its material is cheaper and you would save money because you would already pay off the house. Why is this more sustainable than building a brand new primary structure? The money wise and it also has some advantages that normal primary structures would have.
