I think keeping it beside them is a safety issue, but some pluses is that if students do keep them beside them at all times then there wont be a chance of stealing or any student "browsing" through the bookbags. So I would keep that in mind, because in our cafeteria (if you want to look at my profile, feel free to browse) we also have hooks but most students prefer to keep the bookbags beside them!

I think having another area for the back packs is a great idea. I think you should think about the security issues to having hangers rather than lockers. For example, is a student going to feel secure enough to leave their belongings on a hanger with other back packs nearby when students are going to be hanging out near the hangers, hanging and grabbing their back packs? How safe is your school? Why do students keep their back packs next to them rather then laying it against the wall of the cafeteria or elsewhere? Just some questions to consider. Follow whatever you think is best for your school since you know it best!

I like how you summed up everything at the end, taking the problems and bulleting each one. I like your idea of the collaberating of the music and artwork and such. Your plan to redo the cafeteria is very great.

Very nice job with the outlay on this! i love the edible garden and the colaberation of the outdoor seating with it. It makes it more inviting then the way it is now. Keep up the great work! (:

Some students may leave their back packs in their lockers.. However, others will not fit with the other binders, books, paper, etc.. The back pack hangers will create an organized place for students to keep their items other than a pile of clutter in the hallway, or creating a tripping hazard next to the students themselves.

Very nice plan! Back pack hangers? It's a security concern. Why not lockers? Or have students leave back packs in their own lockers? But that is a good idea to have students store their back packs elsewhere besides next to them on the floor where it can be a tripping hazard.

THE PROBLEM- (REVISED)

Existing concerns at Johnson City High School Cafeteria include lacking space, poor acoustics and an out-of-date kitchen area. Also, it lacks some slight features that could advance the overall cafeteria and expand it, using more natural resources. Unfortunately, the school’s cafeteria does not work to its maximum potential with the student body.

•The lines to get food are extremely unorganized, long and tedious.

•It is very easy for students to cut and to create problems during the process of lunch time.

•Currently there are roughly 200 students at Johnson City High School. Unfortunately, with all of the students, there is not enough sitting room in the cafeteria.

•When it is cold outside the students cannot all fit inside let alone have a place to sit.

•The school’s center courtyard is an area of vacant space that has potential to be a wonderful area for outdoor seating. The garden/courtyard will allow our school to be very eco-friendly. (The idea of all natural and energy efficient ways to store water, natural soils, and compost would allow our school to offer a healthy cafeteria.)

Great attempt on your drawings! I see you have incorporated glass walls to allow for transparency to outdoors spaces in your scheme.I do have a few pointers to better your scheme.

1- I notice the entry to the toilets facing the seating area. This will not be a pleasant sight while eating.
Also this spot will have a lot of traffic and will be bothersome to the people at the tables near the toilet entry.Rotating the toilet block 90 deg clockwise could solve this.

2- The entryways into the dining space lack clarity. Are they air locks?why are they surrounded by walls?is there a sliding door at one end?

This is a very nice diagram! I really like how you created niches in the path for seating and eating. I like how you have integrated a rain garden into your design, thinking about the environment. I would study your site more and consider native plants and a bioswale to make it not only low maintenance but a good place to enjoy nature. And you have done a very good job with that in the edible garden.
