2012 national competition project #031 | cafeteria redesign
Summary
After reviewing the information I collected in the previous step, I tried to begin coming up with solutions for the existing problems in my school's cafeteria. For the problem of overcrowding, I want to add a second floor to the cafeteria, which would simply consist of more seating space for students. Also, I would like to move the courtyard that is across from the annex, and attach it to the main cafeteria, to provide an outside eating area for all students. With this extra space, the cafeteria annex will be specifically for quiet studying. In addition, I would like to have a variety of tables, to give students more options for seating. I also want to address the lighting problem in our cafeteria; right now it is very dark, so I would like to add several large windows between the main cafeteria and courtyard so that the lighting is much brighter, which will also use less electricity and make the cafeteria more sustainable. Another problem that I want to fix is the long lines that form when students are getting food. First, I want to move the snack bar next to the kitchen, so that all of the food is in one area. Also, I feel that each line should be distinct, and separated with dividers, so that students do not get bunched up. I think that there should be more cashiers and food servers, as well, to keep the lines moving swiftly, so that students are not waiting long to purchase their lunch.
