Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #207

Summary

I would like to make the overall look of the school to be more modern instead of an old factory.
High Tech High School is located on a hill in North Bergen, New Jersey. At the bottom of the hill is where the current gym is located. Looking from the front of the school building, there is a parking lot for the teachers and students which has potential to build there, but I’m not really sure yet. Down the hill there is another parking lot to the left where the buses are parked. It is fairly large and is where I would like to put one of my bigger ideas for a pavilion. Another potential building site is behind the school. Currently the space is used for basketball courts and another parking lot.
When I was gathering information about my high school’s area, I found a number of problems. North Bergen has lots of hills and High Tech High School is located on the lower part of one of the hills. Not far further down, is the bottom of the hill where our gym and another school, called Academy for Independent Studies (AIS), is located. When it rains for a long period of time or when it becomes heavy, there is a lot of flooding in this area. In order to overcome this obstacle, I would have to build the pavilions on foundations that are high enough so that the pavilions do not flood. There are probably other options, but I cannot find any other solutions at the moment.
I plan to design one large pavilion using two different locations. There is a street between these two locations, however I can connect the two locations with a bridge. The bridge would not be a regular bridge that is just a way to get from point A to point B, but a bridge that contains a track and maybe a few other things. The first part of the large pavilion would be located, in what is currently a parking lot, in front of AIS school and the field house. The second location would be located in a section of the high school’s school bus parking lot. This lot is a big lot, but I do not wish to use all of it, otherwise I would have to find another place to relocate the school buses. Connecting the two pavilions would be a bridge to keep a sense of flow throughout the two locations instead of having two separate pavilions.
