Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #28

Summary

The surrounding buildings are mainly residential with some small businesses a block away. There is also a hospital on the north side of the school, but that is a block away from the proposed site for the pavilion. For the most part, the existing gym will remain unchanged aside from some material switches. The main focus of this project will most likely be the extension over the existing yard.
Previously shown in the collecting info, I will potentially be utilizing a mobile wall, a light well, and gym equipment that is multifunctional to save space. The mobile wall will be there to separate the classes and activities. The light well will be used in the 2-3 story weight room to make up for the loss of natural light in the south west corner. The multi-use gym equipment is a good idea because it can save space as well as encourage people to try something different since the other workouts are 2 steps away from them.
In terms of material changes, I will take my gym teacher’s advice and change the material of the upper level track, and add additional padding on the first floor gym. This is because I’ve had personal experience of hustling for a basketball and ended up sliding into the wall hurting myself.
