Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #28

Collecting Information

The first floor gym is comfortable, but it is far from perfection. Aside from the design suggestions made in the overview, the faculty had some things to say about the facilities as well. Their input helps me to hone in on a space that is not only thinking from the student and the public’s side, but as well as the faculty who will coexist with them.
The main problem was that because of the large student body, there are often multiple classes in the gym at one time. Having an interior partition that can be easily removed would be ideal for situations like these to keep classes separate. I was considering a folding+ rotating wall that slides as well so that a variety of options are available when there are multiple classes. The folding and rotating aspect will accommodate different sports and drills that they follow.
The other problem that was brought up pertained to the indoor track which is accessible through the second floor. It was said that the path was narrow, the finish was too rough, and the shape of the track itself is too round, which is a hazard for the students. I can propose to change the width to something greater, shape to something that makes sense, and material to something softer with my new design.
