Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #28

Summary

For the solution, I built upon the ideas that I proposed, but also had to get rid of some as well. For example, the foldable partition wasn’t an ideal thing due to conflicting schedules of use as well as the limited space for sports played in the gym. Also, I had an idea for a light well to place in the weight room, but that idea was thrown away due to the limited space.
The layout I made in Revit was based on separation of public and private usage of the athletic facilities. The school has three other weight rooms, but it would be inconvenient for the public to access those. So I made another weight room that’s exclusively for the public. There’s a waiting area where people can sign in, lockers, and bathrooms. The corridor that looks into the weight room doubles as a platform for the school gym. Bleachers can be placed on top for use during school athletic events. As for the indoor track that’s accessible from the second floor, the material is going to be vulcanized rubber because that surface is an ideal choice for my situation. It’s shock absorbent and will hurt less when a student falls on it.
I essentially left the open space gym alone aside from the proposed padding because adding anything additional will cause clutter and will intrude in the space allotted for the huge gym class sizes. In terms of storage, there isn’t really a problem because the equipment needed is either to the side, or it’s in the already existing storage room.
