Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #172

Summary

Collecting info is the most important step of the design process. In this step the architect gathers as much information of the site, exiting buildings, and the community’s ideas. Firstly I wanted to learn about the history of the school and the existing building to understand why it was built the way it was. Our teacher told the entire class of the history and provided the class with the floor plan so we could better understand the existing gym. Secondly, I took pictures of the existing building and field, and took notes on the negatives and positives of the existing building and field. Thirdly I asked teachers and students what they would like to see changed, and what they would like to have what the existing gym and field does not offer. Lastly to better understand athletic pavilions, I researched guide lines, such as average room sizes for a basketball courts and weight rooms. Also, I analyzed floor plans of recently built athletic pavilions, to understand how to control traffic and how to arrange rooms to reduce noise.
