Summary

The measurement of the current space in Mira Loma High School's cafeteria is forty-seven meters by twenty-eight meters. The current capacity of people able to fit in the cafeteria is five hundred fifty-five. The staff and students at Mira Loma High School use the cafeteria for eating, making food in the kitchen, drama skits, school meetings, choir gatherings, cheer leading practice, dance practice, physical education during the raining season, wrestling, registration, orientation, and other school activities. The current limitations of the space is the use for the cafeteria. Occasionally, the community uses the space in the cafeteria for choir, SAT reviews, and parent meetings. The staff in charge of the cafeteria requested new changes they wanted to see done in the new cafeteria once it's built. These changes are a bigger kitchen, new equipment, storage space for the cafeteria equipment, and air condition in the kitchen.
The team's plan is to expand the cafeteria, by adding a second story. This will allow more room for a bigger kitchen and a storage room. Dynamic Designs plans to include an air condition into the cafeteria for the cooks. Also, the team wants to get the community involved more. They will add a garden rooftop that will be energy efficient, and will be open to the public and will also rent out the new space in the cafeteria during weekends, holidays, and summer vacations, to make more funds toward the school.
The Government is involved in Green Building Standards on school campuses by insuring requirements so in July 2008; the Commission passed the California Green Building Standards Code, with goals to reduce water and energy use in buildings and will be mandatory after the year of 2009. Some of the methods that Mira Loma uses to reduce their carbon footprint is by recycling paper, containers, and electronics. Aim to be paperless by only printing when absolutely necessary and using two sided printing whenever possible. Buying food from local facilities for the cafeteria will cost less to transport, use less energy, and generate fewer emissions. Installing energy efficient lighting and water efficient fixtures in the bathrooms and kitchens can also save a lot of energy and water usage. The San Juan Unified School District plans to save energy by attempting the Energy and Resource Conservation Plan whose main goals are to achieve and maintain the highest level of energy efficiency, promote resource conservation, and reduce costs at all district sites. The kinds of local utilities that we can partner with to support sustainability and energy efficiency are programs like Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) because they are a construction and operation site that intends to provide high performance green buildings. Another local utility partner can be EPA Green Buildings which promotes energy and resource efficiency, waste reduction and pollution prevention practices, indoor air quality standards, and other environmental initiatives for both new construction and existing buildings.
