FIRST PRIZE: Redesign your school library | 2013 National High School Architecture Competition #368

Summary

I gathered information regarding our school's library by going around taking interior and exterior photos, mainly focusing on its weak and strong points, by surveying students and the library's staff on how they would like to see their library transformed, and by using my own experiences inside the library throughout the years to better outline the library's main problems. There is a general consensus between A-Tech's students that the library should be made more appealing by perhaps expanding on its space, seating, and strengths, by adding more private reading space and specialized space for gaming, and by having outdoor seating, something missing in the current design. The staff believes that the library's floor plan should be better arranged and thought out, increase ease of mobility for special occasions, and include a maker's area in which student's can work on their program area's assignments. Overall, students and the school's staff enjoy the library and don't have any major problem with it, but all agree that certain adjustments could be made to make it better, its strengths could be embellished, and certain aspects could be tweaked. I personally believe that the current design's minimalist approach adequately fulfills all of the requirements of a library and does a great job in integrating sustainability devices. On the faults with the current design, I concur with the problems outlined by the staff and students, but also believe that the library does not play the role of modern library the way it should, like being a social and inviting locale in which students could be glad to meet.
