2013 national competition project | Library Redesign #181

Summary

To collect information, I first sent out a school-wide survey to see what the students want most out of the library and what they like about it already. I also interviewed the librarian to see what her perspective is on the the library as well as made a floor plan indicating the most crowded areas. To summarize all of the data I collected, I made a pros and cons list as a way of telling more clearly what the new library should be like.

While analyzing the results of my ten question student-based survey I found a few particularly surprising facts. In the first question, asking what an ideal school library would be like, almost 75% of students chose a quiet place to study as opposed to a place to get books or a place to hang out and collaborate with friends on projects. Following this question, I found that 84% of the participants in the survey wished for more independent study space in the library and also had the opinion that the library needs more seating space. Similarly, 94% of the student body reported that they check out books less than once or twice a month and 88% reported that they found the library too crowded.
