SECOND PRIZE: Redesign your school library | 2013 National High School Architecture Competition #333

Summary

Summary -- My final design has two floors. The first floor is mostly for the books. The counter is right in front of the entrance and in the (sort of) middle of the library section of the library for ease of access. The reading area provides students with seating and tables. On top of the reading area is a large window that starts from the bottom and curves up to the ceiling and then follows the second floor hallway to the second floor entrance. Next to the reading area is a doorway that opens to the outside for quick access and a hallway that leads to 5 rooms and another doorway. The 5 rooms are the computer lab (for class use), two meeting rooms (for class, club, or faculty use. These include projectors.), the librarian offices (which include a storage room and a break room) and a soundproof theatre at the end. The second floor includes a second floor entrance to the school, a second theatre, a private lounge for faculty and teachers, a computer lab for individual use, and, its main feature, a café and its storage room. The library will have a garden outside and also a garden on its roof. The windows have transition technology so that it can adjust to the intensity of the sun.

In-depth aspects of the redesigned library:

2nd Floor -- To reach the second floor, there are several ways to get there. Inside the library, there are two ways to the second floor. The first is a stairway and the second is an elevator. Both are located directly to the left of the main entrance when facing the check out counter (or the top right when looking at the floor plans). The second floor contains another soundproof theatre, a faculty break room, a computer lab for individual use, and the café (which also includes a seating/dining area and a storage room.) The ceiling of the second floor is partially glass which connects to the window from the reading room on the first floor all the way to the second floor entrance.

Theatres and Meeting Rooms -- The theatre will, of course, include a projector. The meeting rooms will also include a rolling projector screen and a projector with white board walls (the walls are entirely white board so people can write anywhere and also the walls wouldn't need to be re-coated/re-painted. The door will also be partially white-board-material so people can write what's happening inside, the club using it, events, announcement, etc.).

Librarian Offices -- The librarians in the original library didn't like how small and cramped their office was. In the redesign, I increased the size. I also increased the size of the storage room that they thought was also a bit too small. Their break room is located right next to the secondary entrance of the first floor. I feel like this is a good location. The storage room will have two doors, one from the offices and the other connected to the hallway. This isn't shown in the model.

Doors -- A unique note about this library are that they have sliding doors (much like the Japanese) for quick use and to prevent accidental smacking of the face and/or crushing of the fingers. Sliding doors also decrease the amount of space required for the area a normal door would require to fully open and also make it easier to leave open instead of using a door stopper.

The Curtain -- The curtain window/wall will contain photochromic molecules (the ones used in transition lenses) so when the sunlight gets too intense, the window can adjust to let the right amount of light pass through. This can also help during the hot summer times so that, since there will be more sunlight, it can adjust to let less sunlight through and lessen the amount of electricity needed to cool the library.

Café -- The café will be manned by either a student aid, a librarian, or a hired worker. Of course, the café will only be opened in certain times such as before and after school.
A piano will also be in the café for anyone to use. Wouldn't it be great to listen to classical music, drinking a fresh cup of coffee, while reading a good book? The café will also have its own storage room.

Outside Garden -- There will be a garden right in front of the curved window to give a scenery for the reading area. The outside garden will have a fountain, stone pathways, and flora. Students can study under the shadows of the trees and in the cool breeze of nature. This could also give jobs to gardeners and maybe some wishful coin-throwers. The outside garden will also include seating and tables for picnics and outdoor activities.

Roof Garden -- Last but not least, the roof of the library - and the rest of the school's roofs - will have a roof garden along with solar panels. If you look at the .DWF or the Google Maps picture (located in the "Collect Info" section), the rooftop of the school is bare and flat. Currently, all it is doing is keeping the weather out and absorbing heat. A lot of heat. It's also a waste of space. Having a garden on the roof will help nature and the students. Students can go up to the rooftops (via newly installed stairs, since we don't have any - at least none that I am aware of - that lead to the roof) and study in the presence of mother nature and breathe fresh air. The stairs that would actually lead to the roof will be an extension of the staircase-elevator combo that connects the first and second floor. Along with the garden will be solar panels in the rooftops that the garden (and students) will not have access to, such as the ones that bulge up and outwards. Installing the solar panels here will definitely decrease the electricity demand and will result in a more green school. I couldn't actually implement this into the model because of some issues with placing them.
