Redesign your school library | 2013 National High School Architecture Competition #389

05/14/13
This is the final rendering of the library in its whole with all of the new additions included into the design. Area number 1 is the new computer lab. I wanted to add this lab due to the fact that in the future students going to be doing everything in school virtually. Area number 2 is the lounge area. This is crucial because in the future the library will also be known a hangout area. Area number 3 is the main part of the library redesigned to suit traffic flow, energy efficiency and comfort for the students and faculty of our school. Area number 4 is the new online student lab used for students with online classes. Area number 5 is the new cyber cafe and was redesigned for the comfort and convenience of the faculty. Area number 6 is the newly redesigned senior courtyard. This perfect outdoor reading area is equipped with a new snack stand, outdoor sunny seating, outdoor shady seating as well as a pergola.

You did a very good job with your research and understanding the project in three dimensions. It's tough to understand how the different floor levels and skylights work together sometimes. You definitely get it. Your renderings are also fantastic!

I wish you took some of your ideas to the extreme and then worked your way back to "reality". I think you would have ended up with a much more dynamic space. For example, the glass wall in the computer lab could have been curved to match the traffic flow or the stairs to the lounge could have been angled to match the entrance. I was really hoping I'd see the frameless glass wall in your final design. You also created a very defined outdoor space with the pergola and there's no reason you can't do that kind of thing inside as well. You can use flooring, walls, and ceilings to define the different spaces, but you chose only to express the traffic circulation in the space. You could have taken that idea further and treated the computer areas the same, the bookshelf areas the same, etc. Then it would become more obvious that these different spaces indeed have different uses.

I know it sounds like I'm picking on your project, but it was very well done. Next time go crazy at the beginning! You never know where it may lead.
