Green design as i like to call it can allow the building to be self sustainable. The advancements in solar panels allow the architect to design an exterior that has the wow factor but also has a purpose. Another idea that i thought would be neat is if you put a windmill on the side of the building (some what like the bottom left picture), and harvest the winds energy and maybe even cool the building.
