Cork Flooring.
We chose cork flooring for it's comfort and environmentally friendly appeal. Cork, once sealed, is a moderately durable floor treatment, which boasts high cushion and aesthetic. Cork is also good for sound insulation. It is maintained similarly to softwood in that it requires occasional cleaning to remove particles that could cause surface scratches such as pebbles. However, Ms. L. informed us that students are required to take off their shoes before entering this space, so dirt and damage are minimized this way. Cork can be lightly sanded every couple of years to keep it in good condition. It's major drawbacks are that it swells in high humidity and discolours in direct exposure to UV light, both of which are not present in the drama room. Another drawback is that cork compresses if a large amount of pressure is exerted on it over a long period of time, however, since there is no furniture in the middle of the room, this does not become an issue.
