Google sketch up is a great quick way to visualize space. I also strongly suggest (as I have throughout all comments to all students) to work with physical materials to make scaled models of the space. Virtual space is great but it is different than making it with real materials. Ideally you do all of these things together- sketching, physical model making, and virtual design (CAD).
