I'm a designer in Connecticut who served on the competition jury. I've enjoyed reviewing your project. Congratulations on the work you have done on the project. I am extremely impressed with the research you conducted and the variety of drawings presented.
I did have a few questions–How many students converge upon the “cafeteria” at lunch time (all at the same 45 minute time block)? Are there waves of students converging?
I really like the idea of having a separate entrance and exit given the number of students accessing this space. Perhaps the doors could be separated further (on same wall) from each other. Appreciated attempts to gain more square footage for students inside the “cafeteria.” Might look at combining all employee support spaces (lounge, bathroom, conferencing, office) upstairs and think about best way to circulate between both floors given safety requirements and accessibility for all employees. Need to consider the weight of storage items relocated to second floor and best way to get them safely up/downstairs.
Wonderful job pulling into details from entire campus into your solution. Good planning to include option for backpack storage. Great idea to include the organic gardens and their plans with your concept. Perhaps a structure (in the future) may be constructed on their site as an option for lunch service to break up flow of so many students converging on one small space at a time.
I would have liked to have seen more plan view drawings of student circulation routes (including topographic level changes) to cafeteria, Winkins Town Square and organic garden at the front end of the process. However, I did get an understanding of this relationship upon final presentation. Great work, well done, keep at it, looks like you had fun!
I'm an architect and high school educator in Florida who served on the competition jury. Take a look at my comments on the earlier phases of your work. Very nice job on all aspects of this project. I think you've found it doesn't always take major changes to improve a project. It feels like if I were to walk on campus and see your addition to the "cafeteria" I would not be able to tell the difference between what was original and what is new. You have a good understanding of your schools' existing design vocabulary. I hope you continue with your architectural exploration. I also encourage you to continue keeping a journal of design impressions, ideas, sketches of things you see and inspire you.
