Is the library currently two stories, or is there another programmatic function on the 2nd level that you will not be touching as part of your renovation? The exterior walls of the library appear to be curtainwalls, which is a wall that spans from the ground level to the roof level and is usually infilled with some sort of glazing- this one has solid glazing as well as traditional glass. have you considered removing the exterior wall and replacing it with a curtainwall that provides more light and visual interest? The wall also does not need to be flat in section.

Currently the library is only one story because the larger building it is a part of houses not only some classrooms on the first floor but there are classrooms on the second floor including two that are directly above the library. We plan on keeping the new library one story by expanding into some open space that has no current function. As for the exterior wall that is a good suggestion; we were thinking about adding more light inside the library anyway.
