High School Library Redesign

04/18/13
This photograph illustrates multiple issues with the existing library. First - the small block of study pods represents the only individual seating option in the library. During finals week, due to the absence of study desks, the entire library is forced to become a quiet zone so students can use groupwork tables to study. Librarians restrict seating to two people per table, as opposed to the usual four, thus reducing seating options during finals week further. Second - the short bookcases on either side of the pods are strewn about the library, inhibiting mobility and creating much wasted space. Third - the large amount of empty floor space visible in the picture shows that there is space to include more seating options. In addition, the picture features the glass wall separating the Commons from the media center, a great design feature that allows natural light through to the library as well as permitting visual exchanges between the two spaces.
