HONORABLE MENTION: 2013 national competition project | Library Redesign #255

Summary

My final design is my vision of a modern library, interpreted to make a students time in their worth while, and create a fun, learning atmosphere. What i did first, was create a better workspace for students to work on the computers. Taking away the books, I lined computers along the walls of the library, and in groups surrounding those areas. That allows for teachers to take their students into the library, and isolate them from other classes or students. With each little isolated area, I added a smart board with a built in projector, so teachers can teach their students while they work. With the computers in the back row, are enabled IPod/IPad/IPhone chargers, allowing students to charge their electronics during the school day. What I did with the books, was I moved them over to the study room, Room 514. That room was rather big so I cut into it, and allowed myself to create more space to store the extra books. Then, the biggest part of my project, is the cafe i added. The cafe took up room 502 and allows for students to purchase small snakcs and drinks. With these purchases, students can either eat in the little lounge set up in the cafe, or take their snacks outside into the courtyard, attached to the side of the building, giving them a feeling of freedom while outside. Connected to the cafe, I transformed the storage space into a kitchen to store the inventory or snacks students can purchased, equipped with a freezer, storage cabinets, and a sink. Outside in the courtyard, I added picnic tables scattered throughout. Covering the tables are umbrellas protecting students from the sun as they study/eat/relax. Around the outside of the courtyard are benches, giving students a wide variety of seating options. There is also a big garden in the middle of the courtyard, giving it some scenery, along with barracading the students in with a row of trees, allowing them not to leave, but still giving the area beauty. Lastly, what I changed was the librarians office. What was two seperate offices is now one connected office, giving them space to work together and communicate between the two of them, and allowing them to have their own little personal areas within that space. in there they can work on their projects without being disturbed by students.
