2012 national competition project #031 | cafeteria redesign

Summary

There are several problems existing in my school's cafeteria. One of them is the overcrowding; there are so many students packed into the cafeteria, about 300 students, and not enough seating options or space. This causes many students to have to sit in the cafeteria annex, which was originally supposed to be for studying, but is now just as loud as the main cafeteria. Also, the only outside seating area that students are allowed to use is only for seniors and located far away from the cafeteria, although, there is a courtyard directly across from the cafeteria annex that is not being used. I spoke to several other students about how they felt about our cafeteria; many of the underclassmen want to have an outside eating area. Also, we do not have enough people serving food and the serving system we have isn't sufficient because the lines of students waiting to get food everyday are very long. Another issue that most students brought up is that there are not a lot of trash cans, and they are only located on one side of the cafeteria. It would be much more convenient to have trash cans all around the cafeteria. In addition, several of the students I spoke to wish that we had more of a variety of seating options, so that they can only sit with their friends and can have more private conversations.
