Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #170

Summary

The process to getting so much info on this gym began without observations on both the exterior and interior of the gym and the view of the outside field. The gym itself is nothing out of the ordinary and is in fact quite boring. Looking around I noticed that the outside curvature of the wall of the weight room is made of glass blocks which allows unnecessary blinding light! Not only that, but on an embarassing note, the color of the gym doesn't match the school at all. It only got worse as I stepped inside the gym. The actual gym itself excluding all other rooms cannot accomadate for so many students which an average class contains 20 and up to 80 students. It should be noted that the gym is barely enough for one basketball court and it is also filled with bleachers which allow only minimal room for any activities of the sort for a class of at least 60+ large. The weight room is blindingly bright due to the curved glass block wall. These are the main problems of which I observed. Then I decided to ask the P.E. teachers on what they thought were the main concerns of the gym. It turns out they had a lot to say! They were very specific when asked about the gym, especially on the space and locker rooms. They suggested the locker rooms be better ventilated because, well, they stink. More importantly, the gym space should at least be doubled to accomodate for the large class sizes so everyone would have a chance to play. I'm positive that my design (while somewhat unrealistic) is able to accomadate everyone.
