Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #163

Summary

When first given this project, the architecture teacher explained the history of not only the gym, but the entire school. That was the first time most of the class had ever heard anything about it, and it was surprisingly fascinating and exciting to hear about. We were taken around the gym and were told to closely examine all the details that went into creating it. Nobody ever realized how poorly designed our school was until then. After actually looking around and having an explanation as to why everything was made the way it was, I had a basic idea of what I wanted to change about the gym... everything. $12 million was spent on constructing the gym and it is not hard to admit that it was a complete waste of money. The first idea that popped into my mind was that I wanted to completely demolish it and redesign it in order to actually fit the needs of not only the students, but also all of the events and activities that actually go on. I asked many of the students as well as staff what they would like to see if we had a chance to design it the way we would like it and I tried to incorporate all of the ideas into my final design. Since the gym is the place where events such as senior awards night and music concerts are held, I also asked a few parents what they would like to see as well. The gym is part of a representation of our school. For students thinking about applying to our school, one of the first places they are introduced to is the gym. If it looks as bad as it does, who is to say that it will not make them wonder if the classes are equally as unfit?
