2012 national competition project #076 | cafeteria redesign
|Being the only place for students to eat, socialize and take a breath of fresh air between classes during the school day, it is sad to think that the cafeteria in itself is considered as nothing more but a square space, filled with industrialized plastic chairs and the usual uniform tables. More often than not, school cafeterias are impersonal and rigid, programmed to house a multitude of messy, hungry children with no emotional consideration.
The standard cafeteria, with its terrible lighting, undesirable choice of furniture, and unbearable congestion of hundred, sometimes even thousands, of students, may serve the purpose to house and feed, but it does not welcome any sense of creativity and excitement.
My goal is to incorporate comfort and relaxation into what is usually deemed as an institutional space, while keeping a focus on introducing sustainability and healthy eating. I am taking my school's existing cafeteria and reconsidering it's design and relationship with the fantastic outdoor space and Floridian weather. Another one of my main concerns considers the people that use the cafeteria, mainly the students, who, at the stage of highschool education find themselves looking for a place to fit in or work. I intend to address these needs, seeing its importance as a student myself, but in a way that will give the students a place for their own groups but also connect them in a familiar and harmonious way, thus the name Connect the Dots.

Your thought is succinct but I suspect your objective(s) are more involved. Can you elaborate further?
This is a fantastic statement: very concise and clear. This will allow you at every stage of the process to check in and make sure you are attending to everything you set out to accomplish. Excellent!
