Summary

For this project, I first determined where I wanted to place my park within the city. Since I had the option of choosing between two sites, I compared the two areas including the demographics for who might use the park. The demographics were relatively similar, though one of the neighborhoods had more commercial spaces than residential homes. I also figured out how much space I had to work with, which ultimately helped me decide which site I wanted to use. At this point, I started to look up what things are most commonly associated with pocket parks and made a list of the different aspects that I wanted to include. I even referenced some of the parks already situated in Las Vegas for ideas, such as Sunset Park and the pocket park at City Center on the Strip. I looked up a lot of desert landscaping ideas as well as ideas for interactive sculptures -- both of which are concepts that I would like to include in my designs.

For the Desert landscaping, I focused mostly on which plants would be environmentally appropriate for the area. The Southern Nevada Water Authority has part of their website dedicated to information on the different types of plants that will grow in the Las Vegas desert. Using this website, i found a number of trees and bushes that are low maintenance and have low requirements for water as well as being colorful and attractive.

Since I want to include a sculpture park in my design, i spent a fair amount of time looking at images of parks that include sculpture art and other interactive art. some of the parks that I looked at are also ones that I can remember going to when I was younger and have fond memories of.
