Desert Willow Park
|Las Vegas is one of those cities that always seem to be expanding. As more and more people and their families move to Las Vegas looking for job opportunities, the need for housing also increases. New neighborhoods spring up across the valley, but the number of community spaces within those neighborhoods remains limited. Even some of the existing neighborhood parks are in run down condition and are not well maintained. Also, due to the period of drought that Las Vegas and most of the west coast is experiencing, many of the parks have become little more than large patches of dead grass with the occasional playground.
However, the goal of this project is to incorporate a new community park into an unused area within a residential area of Las Vegas. A pocket park is usually created in the leftover and generally unusable spaces within a neighborhood and oftentimes acts as a type of refuge from urban life. They can also be used as meeting and gathering spaces for events, or as safe areas for children to play in. Overall, I hope to create a functional space that can be enjoyed by all generations and can be used by the generations to come. I want this park to be very community oriented and enjoyable. I would like to incorporate desert landscaping that is both beautiful and water smart, as well as interactive areas for both children and adults.

Collecting information was really thorough and diverse. I especially liked the attention to the specificity of the location during the formation of the park concept. The sketches and renderings were carefully done and well presented. I would have liked to have seen the final project tied more closely to the specific site that was collected.
This is a well thought out design, and I appreciated how the steps were documented skillfully, using sketching, drawing, Photoshop, and 3D modeling/rendering. It seemed like you thought carefully about what would attract someone to this park, and how people would move through it and us it. Very impressive!
