Summary

My team and I took long periods of time to research and really get a feel of what pleasing an enjoyable for people to see in a building in today's population. What we found were abstract shapes and modern equipment. One architect group that expressed this was Nabil Gholam Architects in their creation of a CMA-CGM, a widely known shipping container company, headquarters. For the building they used a number of Eco friendly strategies such as including a high performance facade, solar power, day-lighting, and rainwater collection. These ideas reduced costs and and provided comfort for the company's employees. Now even though my group really thought that the CME-CGM building was cool we still wanted to research more to get a more detailed look at today's buildings. We found that there are more complex ways to do landscaping and still making it so that an area can be water efficient.

One other architect that inspired our exterior designer was a building created by a Mies Van Der Rohe in 1956. It was inspiring because it got us to think about creating a cafeteria with a similar design to Mies "Crown Hall". The fact that the whole front of the building was glass and was supported by steel beams. It was very interesting to look at.

Now thinking about all the buildings and developmental pictures we saw it made us think about our cafeteria's current problems. Currently the lunch lines at our school are unorganized and take up a lot of space. In order to solve this problem we redefined where the food would be served and how lines are going to form. Our new design now includes circular food servers with the line wrapping around it in order to conserve space. Although there may still be a large line, it wouldn't extend as far into the cafeteria as it does currently. Also, we decided to add a second floor to our cafeteria which will create much more seating and less traffic in the cafeteria as a whole. The second floor will also provide a social space due to its arcade and new cafe with wide spaces to sit, inside and out.
