2013 national competition project | Library Redesign #181

05/13/13
After coming to the conclusion that there needs to be a bigger and more modern space for the library, I brainstormed ideas of where to place the new library around campus. At first, it was difficult because Saint Ursula is incorporated into an urban neighborhood, and in order to expand, property must be bought from the houses around it. My first idea was to build up and place the library on the top of the theater (above picture), but the air conditioning vents and the puddles of water unable to be drained on the roof would lead to future complications. However, my expansion problem was solved when I was talking to my design teacher about possible locations. She told me that there are plans to use the underground space of our Student Life building for a new library. Although there is no outdoor seating available (being that it is on the North side of the campus where there are no patios or room to expand), the amount of space that is devoted to a modern library is promising.
